Task 3: Understanding key techniques in music videos

This post is going to be about different thing you can do in editing in music videos.

Cut to the Beat

This is shows where the edit has taken place. The markers are where the beats changes. The makers help you know when to edit. You can see that where the markers are there ha been a change in shot, you have to make sure that it is a clear change so that it can make the shots can link with the music. Depending on what you want to music video to be about this can be really important. I think that this can really get the audience really interested in the music video because the changes can catch your attention, for example if there is a drum fill that a band has made then they edit different shots to the beat of the drums then that would really stand out.

Split screen

Split screen is very useful because it can show two different parts at the same time. This means that you can be really creative about what you are doing.

Task 2 Part 2 = Forms of music videos

This post is going to be covering the different forms of music  videos.

Digital animation
This is when a music video is an animated music video that would be created on a computer. Would be the music video for Young Folks by Peter, Bjorn and John. This is because the whole music video is a digital animation the whole way though

Stop motion
This is when they take different images of something then edit them together to make it into a video a really good example of this would be Wide Awake By Katie Perry. This is not the original video for it but some one copied the original music video by in stop motion.

In concert
This is when the artist has a music video of them performing there song live. I think that this is really good because you get to see them perform there song and sometime they are a little bit different to the original song itself. It also a way of some artists to get more people to view there song. For example if they realised there music video for there song they could make a live version of it to get more people to listen.

Live footage
This is when there is a music video of an artist or a band on tour and they are joking around not really taking things seriously. I think that this is a good way to show that the artist is human as it shows what they do when they are not performing.

studio based
This is when there is a music video that would be filmed either in the studio where they recorded it. Or on the set where they filmed the video e.g. like a tv studio. I think that these videos especially the one's where they film in the recording studio is really good because they give the music its self a more real feeling.

Cinematic
This is when the music video would tell a story or almost look like a film. Some of them can be really good because they can make the song really memorable this can be due to a high budget or because of of scenes in the video. Some cinematic music videos can be really good and intresting. This normally due to the high budget

Task 2 part 1: 6 key convetions

Andrew Goodwin came up with 6 different key conventions that where established in different music videos.

1) music videos demonstrate genre characteristics
This is the deferent settings that certain genres of music videos have in there music video. For example in  metal music videos they would use shots from some of there live performaces which can also be the same as some rap and hip hop videos. But videos by boy or girl bands would have more choreographed dancing in them. It can all very from different artists as a lot of electronic artist would have cineamtic music videos.

Rage against the machine used live footage for one of there most well know music videos and it is good because it suits the music that they made.

This artist has used a more cinamtic style in the music video and i think that it suits as to get the audience intrested in the music more they need something that the viewer can focus on that fits with the music.

This music video suits the people dancing in it purely because of the music. The beat has a more dance feel to it unlike rage against the machine or Jon Hopkins

2) There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals
This when the music video would be linked with the lyric so it would describe what would be going on in the music video almost. A good example of this would be King Krule's Rock Bottom becasue the everything he sings about is happing in the video more or less. He talks about running away so it shows  him in an empty area.

3) There is a relationship between music and visuals
The relationship between music and visuals is where the tempo would match the pace of the video. A lot of videos would have this in because if the music is slow then the video wouldn't be fast as it wouldn't really match up. A good example of the would James Vincent McMorrow Cavalier because as the song would et fast so would the music video, so at different stages of the video the speed would change.

4) The demande of the record label
The demand of the record label would require the artist to have a lot of close ups and for example a lot of pop and rub artist use this to promote music videos. In most of Katy Perry or Miley Cyrus's videos they use a lot of close-ups and star themselves.

5) There is a frequently reference to notion of looking
This is where the the video would be focused on the artist and have them looking directly looking at the camera or have a lot of eye contact with the camera. A lot of RnB artiest and Pop singers often use this because when they look at the camera it catches the attention and they also where a lot of proactive clothing or things that would stand out to catch the attention of the viewer.

6) There are often intertextual reference
This is when the video would reference a film or a tv show or even another music video this can be useful to get a defferent kind of audience. A good example of this would be thriller by micheal jackson as it references the film.
