Task 4: understanding key techniques of music videos

For Task we had to film different shots of two people singing an elton john song and edited it to look like they was acutally signing it. There was a few different techniques that we used to film. One being playng the music on a phone and wrting the lryics down on a piece of paper for them to sign too.
When editing we had to sync different shots to make sure that.

Firstly i put all the sequences together so that i could cut them and put them and then put them into oder.

I choose an effect so i was able to play around with the colour and the brightness as it was a bit dark. This was important as for when I'll be making the music video id be able to mess around with the colours of the different shots that i would be getting.

I used the pen and the clicked on the thing that looked like a mountain at the bottom left hand conner of the screen. I used the pen by clicking on bits of the clip and dragging the black down the the bottom. What this does fades clips in and out. It is very useful when you want something to gradually change rather then just go into a straight shot.

I used the markers on the green bar to let me know when the elton starts sining. On the blue bar i used it to let me know when Daniel started sining. this was handy because it meant that i was able to easily link when the two started rather then trying to make it up by hand.

The blue bars are on top of each other because when the top one is faded out then that means it will play what is underneath leaving it with a good fade out fade in effect.

Task 2 part 3: Different styles of music videos

The main different styles are narrate based, impressionist, surrealist, pastiche, parody, homage and intertextual. This different styles is what can divide different music videos.

Narrate based
Narrate based music videos is where the music video tells a story but not throw the lyrics through the video. its almost like the artist has made a film with the video they have recorded. This are really interesting to see what different musicans have done with there videos.

impressionist
This is when a video hasn't really got much to do with the song but they are doing something impressive in the video. Some videos would use random shots to express certain themes of the video. some other videos that some artist would use for videos would be lyrics that wold relate the the video.

Surrealist
Surrealist is when something is not really real and it is made up. For example seeing an elphant fly would be called surreal. It is wen something is made up that you can't really belive and would be like a dream. This could be used in a music really well because if they can link the music with the video they could make the video look like a really nice dream or a nightmare.

Pastiche
This is when the music video has been set in the past. Or is made to look different. I think that this can be useful when making a music video because it can get more people to view the video as it would stand out form others. Also if it is set in a different error then people that lived through when it was set could watch it therefore the video would get more publicity.

Parody
This is when some makes a music video of the song and they are making fun of the artist. They are normally meant to be really funny and unserious. Really good examples of this would be Miley Cyrus Wreaking ball because there ha been loads of different people that have made different videos of her video.

Homage
This is almost like a parody but were the music video has been copied but it is more serious. It is like a parody but with a lot more respect for the artist. This can be really good because if there is an artist that has passed away and then a director decided to  make a homage for one of there songs then this can get more people to view the dead artists more

Intertextual
This is when a music video would make references to other music videos. It's not always in a way that would make fun of the videos they are referencing but they can. This is also a good way to get people to view your music video because it can voice your opinion on different videos.

Task 3: Understanding key techniques in music videos

This post is going to be about different thing you can do in editing in music videos.

Cut to the Beat

This is shows where the edit has taken place. The markers are where the beats changes. The makers help you know when to edit. You can see that where the markers are there ha been a change in shot, you have to make sure that it is a clear change so that it can make the shots can link with the music. Depending on what you want to music video to be about this can be really important. I think that this can really get the audience really interested in the music video because the changes can catch your attention, for example if there is a drum fill that a band has made then they edit different shots to the beat of the drums then that would really stand out.

Split screen

Split screen is very useful because it can show two different parts at the same time. This means that you can be really creative about what you are doing.

Task 2 Part 2 = Forms of music videos

This post is going to be covering the different forms of music  videos.

Digital animation
This is when a music video is an animated music video that would be created on a computer. Would be the music video for Young Folks by Peter, Bjorn and John. This is because the whole music video is a digital animation the whole way though

Stop motion
This is when they take different images of something then edit them together to make it into a video a really good example of this would be Wide Awake By Katie Perry. This is not the original video for it but some one copied the original music video by in stop motion.

In concert
This is when the artist has a music video of them performing there song live. I think that this is really good because you get to see them perform there song and sometime they are a little bit different to the original song itself. It also a way of some artists to get more people to view there song. For example if they realised there music video for there song they could make a live version of it to get more people to listen.

Live footage
This is when there is a music video of an artist or a band on tour and they are joking around not really taking things seriously. I think that this is a good way to show that the artist is human as it shows what they do when they are not performing.

studio based
This is when there is a music video that would be filmed either in the studio where they recorded it. Or on the set where they filmed the video e.g. like a tv studio. I think that these videos especially the one's where they film in the recording studio is really good because they give the music its self a more real feeling.

Cinematic
This is when the music video would tell a story or almost look like a film. Some of them can be really good because they can make the song really memorable this can be due to a high budget or because of of scenes in the video. Some cinematic music videos can be really good and intresting. This normally due to the high budget

Task 2 part 1: 6 key convetions

Andrew Goodwin came up with 6 different key conventions that where established in different music videos.

1) music videos demonstrate genre characteristics
This is the deferent settings that certain genres of music videos have in there music video. For example in  metal music videos they would use shots from some of there live performaces which can also be the same as some rap and hip hop videos. But videos by boy or girl bands would have more choreographed dancing in them. It can all very from different artists as a lot of electronic artist would have cineamtic music videos.

Rage against the machine used live footage for one of there most well know music videos and it is good because it suits the music that they made.

This artist has used a more cinamtic style in the music video and i think that it suits as to get the audience intrested in the music more they need something that the viewer can focus on that fits with the music.

This music video suits the people dancing in it purely because of the music. The beat has a more dance feel to it unlike rage against the machine or Jon Hopkins

2) There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals
This when the music video would be linked with the lyric so it would describe what would be going on in the music video almost. A good example of this would be King Krule's Rock Bottom becasue the everything he sings about is happing in the video more or less. He talks about running away so it shows  him in an empty area.

3) There is a relationship between music and visuals
The relationship between music and visuals is where the tempo would match the pace of the video. A lot of videos would have this in because if the music is slow then the video wouldn't be fast as it wouldn't really match up. A good example of the would James Vincent McMorrow Cavalier because as the song would et fast so would the music video, so at different stages of the video the speed would change.

4) The demande of the record label
The demand of the record label would require the artist to have a lot of close ups and for example a lot of pop and rub artist use this to promote music videos. In most of Katy Perry or Miley Cyrus's videos they use a lot of close-ups and star themselves.

5) There is a frequently reference to notion of looking
This is where the the video would be focused on the artist and have them looking directly looking at the camera or have a lot of eye contact with the camera. A lot of RnB artiest and Pop singers often use this because when they look at the camera it catches the attention and they also where a lot of proactive clothing or things that would stand out to catch the attention of the viewer.

6) There are often intertextual reference
This is when the video would reference a film or a tv show or even another music video this can be useful to get a defferent kind of audience. A good example of this would be thriller by micheal jackson as it references the film.

Task 1: Purpose of a music video

Promotion
Advertisement
some music videos that people make can be use as advertisement for other peoples product this is because they could get paid by the company to advertise it. They would also get loads of free stuff to do it, for example Tyler the creator got sponsored buy the skating brand supreme so in there songs and videos they where alot of the clothes and use there skate boards.

In his music video for yonkers He wears a supreme hat all through out the video and every sense this they have made a load of sales on there items.

Draws attention to the music
Some artist that want there music video to be about the music and not about a really expensive video for example there is a music producer and director that is called Vash and he made this video for the artist Dpat and the video makes the music stand out because every time the beat changes there is an edit.

Illustrates the song
This means that they producer would make the lyrics into a visual thing so if someone was talking about running through a forest then the video would show someone running through a forest. An example of someone doing this would be the band Diiv because they directed there own song called Doused and at the begging of the song they talk about running so they showed the lead singing running through the street.

Appeals to a visual audience
This is where the music video that is based on the video more then music because the video has nothing to do with the music. This is how a lot of bands or artist can get a lot of people to listen to there music by having a really good video so that more people would see the song but actually a lot of the time they just watch the video and don't really listen to the music.

Expresses an Individvaks emotion
This is were a someones makes a music video and the video itself can expresses what the person is feeling. For example if the video is meant to be really sad and upsetting then the person is expressing that they are sad. or if the video is silly and funny then they would be expressing that they are happy and really good example of this would be Shinad o'conner because half way thought here music video she started crying which showed she was sad.

Tells a story
Soem music videos are made to tell a story so they would have nothing to do with the music itself but unlike appeals to a visual audience it has something to do with the music. I think that a really good example of this is a band called funeral suits because for one of there music videos it tells a story of a girl running from something.

but what  like about the video is that in a another song they finish the story of as they lift it at a bit of a cliff hanger on the last video.
